It's a secret agent novel that starts with vacations. It's a fun story with decent character
development that works to highlight various cultures and viewpoints on the United States.
Includes details about local Nevada history, museums and more...

A splendid book showcasing native characters from America’s past near Lake Tahoe in Glenbrook,
Nevada. It’s a page turner; an adventure packed with local interest and seedy drug dealings.
Readers get to know the characters—well enough to be in their minds, solving a drug
trafficking case with the help of locals. An excellent choice to take along on your next vacation…
especially when you want to be 'safely' immersed in exciting action. Highly recommended.
Great Story, Fascinating Characters on the shores of Lake Tahoe

With much interest, I have been following M. Barrett Miller’s storytelling of “mates” Jack,
Walking Bear, Mick, Mahaney and others who have deep connections in Mi5,
the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, and the Irish Intelligence Service.
“The Red House” is the 4th in the “Life in the Shadows” series that highlight undercover
adventures and historical facts in many countries throughout the world.
I have enjoyed them all and have appreciate how Mr. Miller’s evocative writing and
multi-layered plots and characters have evolved over the years.
His latest novel, “The Red House” brought me such reading pleasure.
I had the feeling throughout that I was alongside his characters enjoying a bit of peace
and solitude on the shores of Lake Tahoe in the small hamlet of Glenbrook.
The descriptions of the actual Red House and environs where much of the
setting takes place feel like a deeply lived and emotionally connected memory of the author.
M. Barrett Miller’s description of the wrangler at the stables allows the reader to almost
shake the gnarly hand of the cowboy and smell the leather and horse sweat in the tack-house.
And then there is the development of other characters…the fishing guide - the hilariously
grumpy guy with a golden heart, Oscar the inebriated not-so-handy man, and Ray the
stoic bartender. Intertwined in all of this peace and quiet is the story of
undercover law enforcement trying to put a stop to a major and devastating
criminal drug deal that includes torching a forest and canyon in their efforts to
smuggle drugs into the area.
If Native American culture fascinates you, or how undercover law enforcement
carries out its duties, or you want to be reminded of wild times in Virginia City,
and you love a great story, “The Red House” is definitely a book to pursue.

This book about secret agents starts with them going on vacation together to unwind,
but of course, it doesn’t stop with vacation. There is excellent character development.
I love how the characters are from different cultures, and the view of the USA (yanks)
from those eyes comes out. I love how the author has thrown in a good bit of local Nevada
history through the eyes of one of the characters and his interest in museums.
Even though it isn’t the first in the series, it reads well without having previously
read the other books.
